This lithograph, Untitled, was made by Jasper Johns using a printing plate, and it feels like a visual puzzle. The composition, with its framed sections and recurring motifs, reminds me of a dreamscape where things are familiar yet just out of reach. The texture and layering in this piece are really striking. The blacks and grays aren't uniform but vary in depth and intensity, suggesting a process of building up and wearing away. See that square in the center? The way it’s been worked and reworked—the smudges, the ghost impressions—it’s like Johns is showing us the history of the image’s making. The surface has this incredible tactile quality; you can almost feel the grit of the stone. Johns is an artist that springs to mind when I think about Cy Twombly. Both artists embrace a sense of playful ambiguity, leaving room for the viewer to piece together their own narrative. Art, at its best, isn't about providing answers, but about inviting us into a space of contemplation and questioning.
