This is an engraving by Joseph-Ferdinand Lancrenon, entitled "Verheerlijking van Lodewijk XVI van Frankrijk", the glorification of Louis XVI of France. The incised lines create an image out of tonal variation, a process that is both highly skilled and intimately linked to the history of mechanical reproduction. Engraving allowed for the relatively easy dissemination of imagery, making it a critical tool for shaping public opinion. In this case, the artist exalts Louis XVI, a controversial figure executed during the French Revolution. The choice of engraving as a medium underscores the political nature of the artwork; the medium is here a tool in the construction of collective memory. The sharp, precise lines of the engraving create a sense of idealized clarity. The medium itself participates in the message, offering a polished image of a contested figure. The artwork reminds us of the pivotal role that both materials and making play in shaping our understanding of history. It blurs any neat distinction between propaganda and fine art.
