John Moran captured this ‘Tropical Scenery, Darien Harbor – Looking South’ in a photograph. The still water, the distant hills, the rocky shore in the foreground; all contribute to a sense of contemplative calm. The scene evokes the ‘locus amoenus’, the idealised and enclosed natural setting, often found in ancient literature and art. But here, in this tropical context, we see it transformed. It is no longer a simple pastoral escape but a confrontation with the exotic, the unknown. Consider the water, a symbol of both life and the unconscious, stretching out to meet the horizon. This embodies a deep, almost primal yearning for exploration and understanding. Like the German Romantic painters, such as Caspar David Friedrich, Moran seems to want to capture a feeling, the feeling of awe in the face of the sublime. The enduring power of this image lies in its invitation to reflect on our place within the natural world, a question that transcends time and place.
