This stained-glass window was created by Hans Baldung, also known as Grien, in the early 16th century. It's now in the church of St. George, in Gutach Bleienbach. The figures shown in the window tell us about the social and religious values of the time. On one side is a member of the Waldeck family, identified by their coat of arms, and on the other side is St. Peter, identified by his halo and the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Stained glass, as an art form, was closely tied to the Church, and patronage was often linked to social status. By having their image placed alongside a saint, the Waldeck family underscored their piety and sought to legitimize their position within the community. To better understand works like this, we can look to local archives and family histories, which helps us to contextualize the social dynamics reflected in the art.
