Rituele crematiestapels aan de Ganges op de ghats van Varanasi
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
This is Samuel Bourne's photograph of the cremation pyres on the ghats of Varanasi. The sepia tones evoke a sense of historical distance, yet the composition pulls us into the scene. Notice how the ghats, or steps, lead our eye towards the riverbank. Bourne uses the architectural structures, such as the temples and buildings, to create a layered effect. This layering gives depth to the photograph. It also emphasizes the sacred nature of the space. The texture of the stone buildings, the ripples on the water, and the smoke from the cremation fires, all add to the image's richness. These elements invite contemplation on the cycles of life and death. The photograph balances documentary and aesthetic intentions. It captures a moment in time and the complex interplay between ritual, landscape, and human activity. Its enduring power lies in its ability to convey both the visual and the spiritual dimensions of this ancient site.
