Emile Gsell made this photograph, entitled 'Façade Nord de la Grand Pagode', in the late 19th century, a time when photography was becoming a key tool for exploring and documenting the world. The photograph itself, a silver print, has a warmth and depth, a result of the intricate chemical processes involved in its making. Look closely and you’ll see the level of detail captured, from the weathered stones of the temple to the lush vegetation surrounding it. But, in truth, photography wasn't as simple as pointing and shooting. This image would have involved a bulky camera, heavy glass plates, and a portable darkroom for developing the image on-site. And what about the labor that went into constructing the temple itself? The photograph provides a glimpse into the complex interplay between human endeavor and the passage of time. By focusing on the materials and making of the photograph, and by extension, the temple, we can gain a deeper understanding of its cultural and historical significance, and challenge the traditional divide between art, craft, and documentation.
