Curatorial notes
This is ‘Meisje met anker in landelijke omgeving’ made by Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki. This print shows us an idyllic rural scene. Chodowiecki was a master of the etching, a printmaking process dependent on the skillful application of acid to incise an image into a metal plate. The resulting lines, full of tiny burrs, create a delicate, almost shimmering effect on the paper. Here, the technique lends a real charm to the scene, emphasizing the simplicity of country life. You can see a girl standing beside a tree, an anchor propped against its trunk. In the background, a farmer leads an ox, and dogs roam freely around a simple farmhouse. The image speaks to the self-sufficiency of the agrarian life. This wasn’t just a matter of nostalgia. Prints like this were a mainstay of the publishing industry and became affordable, democratic mediums in which to circulate ideas. In this case, the image romanticizes labor, while reminding us of the hard work needed to create not just images, but also communities. It is a testimony to the value of skill and labor, both artistic and agricultural.
