Curatorial notes
Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki created this print, “Gebhard meets Agnes van Mansfeld in the garden” using etching, a demanding and meticulous intaglio process. The process involves coating a metal plate with a waxy, acid-resistant substance, then using a sharp needle to scratch an image into it. The plate is then immersed in acid, which bites into the exposed lines, creating grooves. Ink is applied to the entire plate, then wiped off the surface, leaving ink only in the etched lines. Finally, the plate is pressed onto paper, transferring the image. The image shows a Bishop meeting a woman in a garden with a monument to the side. Chodowiecki was a master of detail, and the etching process allowed him to achieve remarkable precision, evident in the fine lines of the foliage and the textures of the clothing. The amount of labor and skill involved in creating such a detailed image highlights the value placed on craftsmanship. The print’s small size also suggests it was intended for personal enjoyment, and the spread of literacy and the rise of a middle class.
