Editor: Here we have a print, a gelatin-silver print to be precise, titled "Portret van Frank C. Burnand," created before 1883 by The St. James's Photographic Company. I'm immediately struck by the formality, the seriousness etched into Burnand's face… quite a character, really! What's your take on this piece? Curator: It’s curious how photography, then, even more so, strived for a painterly gravitas, isn't it? Look at the dramatic lighting, the way his beard is meticulously groomed. There's a theatricality hinted at, perhaps reflecting Burnand’s connection to "The Theatre" as stated in the print's inscription. Notice the faint inscription below the portrait–do you find it adds an intimate note or perhaps it's self-aggrandizing? Editor: Intimate, definitely! It's like a little secret the image is sharing, humanizing Burnand. What strikes me, though, is the lack of context; I wonder what was going through Burnand’s mind while the photograph was being taken. Curator: Ah, the eternal question. Perhaps he was contemplating the next editorial meeting? We can't truly know his immediate thoughts, but we can use our imagination! We see a well-to-do gentleman of the Victorian era, likely successful and proud, immortalized with some sepia tone! He is now preserved, or should I say 'canned', as Sontag cleverly remarked! What feelings does that bring up in you, reflecting on that "capture" from the 19th Century, with what you know of 21st Century life? Editor: It feels very static, doesn't it? Yet strangely compelling... like a portal! Curator: Exactly! Art often surprises you, inviting you into its peculiar world. I like to see if something ancient speaks to me; sometimes the past grabs my hand and pulls me along on a fascinating ride!
