This photo album, made by Carolina Onnen around 1926, contains memories from travels to Greece, Turkey, France, and Egypt. It's the kind of object that feels both precious and everyday. The cover has this amazing texture – a wrinkled, slightly faded blue paper that makes me think of old maps. The surface has this beautiful, uneven quality. Up close, you can see these little peaks and valleys, like the paper itself is breathing. It’s the kind of texture that makes you want to run your fingers over it, feeling the history embedded in its folds. The way the light catches these imperfections gives the cover a life of its own. Thinking about this album, with its well-worn cover, reminds me a bit of the work of Cy Twombly. There’s something about that same sense of time and ephemerality, that makes you reflect on the layers of experience and the stories they hold. Ultimately, it’s the openness of the album, its capacity to hold countless narratives, that makes it so compelling.
