This photograph, Landschap, met op de voorgrond een berk, presents a landscape with a birch tree in the foreground. The grayscale palette gives it an almost melancholic air. You get the sense that photography, like painting, is a process of selecting and framing the world. There’s a tactile quality to the image, despite its being a photograph. The contrast between the dark foreground and the softer, grey sky makes you feel like you're stepping into a different world. The lines of the birch trees almost feel like brushstrokes. The way the photographer captures light and shadow really draws you into the scene. Looking at the stark branches reaching up, I'm reminded a little of Caspar David Friedrich, although Alfred Schneider uses the camera to give us a similar feeling of Romantic sublime. It’s funny how art from any age can feel like an ongoing conversation across time. Art is always an exchange of ideas, open to multiple interpretations.
