This untitled painting was made by Zdzislaw Beksinski, we don't know exactly when, and you can see, the mood is somber and haunting. The surface of the canvas seems to have emerged from a haze of muted browns and purples, like a dream taking shape. Look how thin the paint must be. I can almost imagine Beksinski applying those layers, shifting and adjusting, allowing these spectral figures to materialize. It makes me think about the way forms can come into being through repeated gestures, each layer building on the last. How do you think Beksinski felt when he put the paint on the canvas? Was he thinking about Goya's dark paintings or maybe the surreal landscapes of de Chirico? I reckon he was trying to find a way to express something deeply personal, something that words just couldn't capture. And isn't that what painting is all about? Exploring the in-between spaces, the places where meaning isn't fixed but always in flux.
