Curatorial notes

This untitled work is by the Polish artist Zdzislaw Beksinski, known for his haunting and dystopian imagery. Beksinski came of age in post-war Poland, a time of intense political and social upheaval which deeply shaped his dark artistic vision. The nightmarish figure sits rigidly, swathed in heavy clothing and a face that seems both human and monstrous, evoking feelings of dread and unease. The artist once said that he wished to paint "as if I were photographing dreams." This idea brings into focus the emotional heart of Beksinski's work - a dreamlike state that captures the most vulnerable and anxious parts of the self. Beksinski rejected traditional interpretations of his work, refusing to assign specific meanings. He instead offered a canvas for viewers to confront their own anxieties. It’s an emotionally challenging work, one that lingers with you long after you've turned away.
