Editor: Here we see "Under the Cherry Blossoms," an illustration to Chapter 8 of the Tale of Genji by Tosa Mitsunobu. The artist has captured an intimate scene. What draws your eye in terms of its formal qualities? Curator: The composition is particularly compelling. Observe how the orthogonal lines of the architecture create a sense of depth, contrasting with the organic forms of the cherry blossoms. Note also the flattening effect achieved through the use of color and line, which is typical of the Yamato-e style. Editor: That's fascinating. I hadn't considered the deliberate flattening. Is there a specific element that contributes most to that effect, in your opinion? Curator: The use of gold leaf and the even distribution of detail across the surface diminish the sense of spatial recession. The abrupt shift in perspective, seen in the transition from interior to exterior space, also disrupts traditional depth cues. Did you notice that, too? Editor: Absolutely. I now have a new appreciation for how the artist uses those elements. Thank you.
