Richard Sochor’s “Gezicht op een straat in Suez” is a double image mounted on card, creating a stereoscopic effect. In this scene, I can imagine Sochor setting up his camera on a bustling street, waiting for the right moment to capture the light and shadow play across the buildings. What was it like to be a European artist wandering through the streets of Suez at this time? What drew him to this particular view? The composition, with its receding lines of buildings and the minaret rising in the background, pulls your eye into the distance. Maybe Sochor was interested in how photography could flatten space and then recreate it, offering a new way of seeing and thinking about the world. Looking at this image, I’m reminded of Eugène Atget's photographs of Paris. Both artists were documenting the changing urban landscape of their time. There is a conversation happening between them through their pictures.
