This is 'Heerenstraat in Paramaribo met bomen en voorbijgangers' by Eugen Klein. It's a black and white photograph, probably taken with some kind of box camera - all the rage back then, I'm sure. I wonder what it was like for Klein to be there, pointing his lens down that street. You can feel the quietness of the scene, but also the heat. I can almost hear the rustle of leaves and the soft footsteps of the passersby. The trees arching over the road make me think of gothic arches, like a cathedral of nature. The photograph makes me think of Eugene Atget wandering the streets of Paris. Both of them, documenting the quiet corners of their worlds, finding beauty in the everyday. And that’s what photography can do, right? It can turn the ordinary into something extraordinary, something worth looking at, something worth remembering. It reminds us that beauty is everywhere, if only we take the time to see it.
