This print, *Toujours Chic Hiver 1921-1922: index*, was made by G-P. Joumard, probably as an advertising brochure. It shows a collection of elegant dresses from the early 1920s, rendered with fine, precise lines and a focus on the textures of the fabrics. I can imagine Joumard working on this piece, carefully sketching each design and imagining the feel of the fabrics described. The way the dresses are presented, each with its own name, is very interesting. Zulmée, Fedora, Dalhia. It gives them a sense of individuality, as if these are characters in a play. This reminds me of other artists who have explored the relationship between fashion and identity, like Erté or Sonia Delaunay, who understood the power of clothing to express personality and societal roles. Think about the contrast between the detailed descriptions and the simple line drawings. This tension creates a space for the viewer to imagine the color and movement of each garment. Joumard invites us to participate in the creative process, to co-create the final image in our minds. The history of art is full of these kinds of dialogues, where artists build upon each other’s ideas, pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
