At first glance, the eye is drawn into a swirl of dramatic activity, rendered with fine, controlled lines that convey a sense of both chaos and classical order. The composition is striking. Below, figures thrash in turbulent waters, while above, deities hover amidst clouds. The contrast between the earthly turmoil and the celestial calm suggests a hierarchy of existence. De Beauvais employs semiotic codes that were well-understood in his era. The nude figures, for example, evoke classical ideals of beauty and the heroic, while their transformation into nymphs speaks to themes of metamorphosis. Yet, the artwork subtly destabilizes such established meanings. By placing these mythological figures in a scene of such violent destruction, Beauvais prompts a questioning of power and fate. Are these beings truly in control, or are they subject to forces beyond their understanding?
