This is Simone Cantarini’s pen drawing, "Rest on the Flight into Egypt". Cantarini was born in 1612, during a period in Italy marked by religious conflict and the rise of Baroque art. The work depicts Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus during their flight to Egypt. It’s a tender portrayal that deviates from traditional, more formal depictions of the Holy Family. The intimate scene reflects a broader cultural shift towards more humanistic and emotional representations in religious art, inviting viewers to connect with the subjects on a personal level. What I find striking is the way Cantarini captures the vulnerability and exhaustion of the refugees, who were fleeing persecution. Mary cradles Jesus, her gaze downcast, while Joseph stands wearily beside them with the donkey. It offers a glimpse into the human side of a sacred story, reminding us of the universal experience of seeking refuge and safety.
