This bookplate, titled "Nobile ornata," was made with woodcut by Christoph Krieger. It depicts a well-adorned noblewoman. The woodcut technique is characterized by its linear quality. Look closely at the figure's drapery, you can see how the parallel lines create the illusion of volume and texture. The artist carves away the areas around the lines, leaving the lines raised, and ultimately inked. This process demands skill and control in carving to achieve the desired level of detail. The decorative elements within the frame, like the grotesque head at the top, are evidence of this. Woodcut is tied to printmaking, and by extension, to early capitalism. It's no accident that this particular bookplate presents a figure of nobility. Printing allowed for wider circulation of images, and the promotion of status through visual display. Considering the material reality of the woodcut reminds us that art is always embedded in processes, social context, and hierarchies of value.
