Curatorial notes
Samuel Prout's drawing captures the Rathaus in Ulm, a building adorned with symbols of civic pride and historical memory. At its heart, the Rathaus features elaborate architectural sculptures, and a fountain teeming with figures, all resonating with the collective aspirations of its community. The fountain, a vertical cascade of sculpted forms, acts as a public theater. Water, as a life-giving force, is presented here amid complex sculptural narratives. Echoes of ancient Roman fountains and their sculptural programs come to mind, where water was similarly choreographed with stone to broadcast power and prosperity. Looking closely, we see how the figures express communal values. This careful construction of public image taps into shared ideals. Water, stone, and human form combine to project a vision of civic order and cultural continuity. Such imagery touches something deep within us, a longing for stability and identity. This symbolic repertoire is not static, but evolves, reflecting and shaping our shared psychological landscape.
