This photograph of glassware, by the Stadler Photographing Company, shows an advertisement for C. Read & Co. in Baltimore, Maryland. It's got this old-timey feel, with its almost monochromatic palette. The objects are rendered in such a way that you can see all the intricate details of the glass. What strikes me is the texture. The photograph captures the cut glass effect which feels so tactile, like you could reach out and feel the ridges and patterns. I like the way that the light creates subtle gradations, highlighting the relief and suggesting a kind of sparkle. There's a piece at the bottom right, labeled '8” Bowl', the radiating pattern reminds me of a starburst. It's a focal point, drawing the eye and creating a sense of dynamism. This piece reminds me of other commercial photography of the era. It’s interesting to see how even in something as functional as an advertisement, there’s still room for artistry. It highlights the care and craftsmanship embedded in the objects themselves.
