This painting was made by Makinti Napanangka, probably sometime in the late 20th or early 21st century, with acrylic on canvas. It's a gorgeous composition using a limited palette of ochre hues. I love the physicality of the paint and how it gives us a direct connection to the artist’s hand. The texture is quite visible, and the brushstrokes are laid down with a kind of repetitive, rhythmic energy. Look at how Napanangka layers the paint in stripes; there is a real process at work. It reminds me of some of Agnes Martin’s quieter paintings, but with more earthy tones. There’s this incredible cluster of circular shapes filled with yellow that contrast with the striations surrounding them. It's like the whole painting is breathing, expanding and contracting with energy. Ultimately, the painting feels like a meditation on color, form, and the act of painting itself, which is how I think about my own work too.
