Robert Delaunay’s ‘Political Drama’ is made using gouache and crayon on paper. These materials don't have the same aura of importance as oil paint on canvas, which was still considered the ‘high art’ medium at this time. Here, the colours and shapes generate a sense of space and movement. In the early 20th century, this was avant-garde. But look closely, and you will see the hand of the artist everywhere. The strokes of the crayon and gouache are visible. The drawing is uneven. It’s clear that Delaunay wasn't interested in making something slick or polished. He seems to be signaling a more immediate, accessible form of expression. By using common materials in a unique way, Delaunay challenges our assumptions about what art can be. It’s not just about skill or technique, but about how the artwork makes us feel and think. Ultimately, this is a testament to the power of making.
