Lon Cronk made this drawing of two silver spoons sometime in the 20th century using pencil and watercolor. The spoons rest on a tan background that seems to have aged over time, adding to the drawing's quiet charm. I like the subtle shifts in tone and the precise lines. You can see where Cronk has built up the form of the spoon by layering delicate washes of grey and white. This gives them a soft, reflective quality, like real silverware catching the light. I wonder about the life of Lon Cronk and what prompted him to make this drawing? I'd like to think that he saw the beauty and simplicity in the everyday objects that surrounded him. The exercise of rendering these objects through close observation reveals a world of endless visual interest.
