Kalamian Walton made this drawing of silver spoons sometime between 1855 and 1995. The three spoons rest quietly against the beige paper. They seem simple, but it's a patient simplicity, built on a process of care and selection. I imagine Kalamian bending over the table, carefully observing each curve and flourish of the spoon. What was going through their mind as they moved the pen across the page? Were they thinking about the history of the objects they were documenting, the families who owned them, or maybe just the simple pleasure of light reflecting off the metal? I feel connected to this artist through the process of artmaking: the intimate, embodied act of drawing, the way the hand translates thought into form. It's a quiet conversation that spans across time, inspiring us to find new ways of seeing and understanding the world.
