About this artwork

Lucas Cranach the Elder made this engraving, The Temptation of St. Anthony, during the early 16th century. St. Anthony was a Christian monk known for his resistance to temptation, often depicted as a physical battle against demonic forces. Here, Cranach visualizes those forces, drawing from a rich tradition of folklore and superstition. The artist's grotesque demons reflect a society grappling with anxieties around sin, morality, and the ever-present threat of evil. These fears were amplified by the religious and social upheavals of the Reformation. The grotesque imagery can be understood as both a reflection of societal anxieties and a commentary on the perceived corruption within the Church. The saint's struggle is our own; a deeply emotional and personal battle to maintain faith and virtue in times of uncertainty. Cranach invites us to confront not only the demons of St. Anthony, but also our own.
