Curatorial notes

Mikhail Nesterov painted this portrait of Ivan Pavlov, though the exact date is unknown. The palette is muted but luminous, capturing a sense of quiet intellect. Look at the soft brushstrokes, they blend the figure into his environment, which really underscores the idea of artmaking as a gradual, unfolding process. The texture here is really interesting; it's smooth, but you can still see the traces of Nesterov's hand, like in the details of Pavlov's beard, or the way the light catches the edge of the book he's holding. These details invite us to consider the physical act of painting, the labor involved in bringing this image into being. The way the paint is applied gives the impression of light filtering through leaves, creating a contemplative atmosphere. In a way, this work brings to mind the portraits of Lucien Freud, both artists were able to evoke a very specific mood through their unique use of paint and composition. Art is a kind of conversation, always bouncing ideas and techniques around.
