Curatorial notes

This print, "Kan met oor, gedragen door drie figuren," was made by Balthazar van den Bos in the 16th century. Its intricate linework invites us to consider the interplay between form and function. The composition is dominated by a ewer-like vessel, ornately decorated and supported by three figures. Note the somewhat disturbing, mask-like faces adorning the vessel, contrasting with the classical, almost Apollonian, figures below. This blending of human, divine, and grotesque elements destabilizes traditional aesthetic categories, reflecting a Mannerist sensibility. The artist uses linear perspective to create a sense of depth, but the flattened planes and stylized forms betray a concern more with surface and pattern. The repetitive motifs and rhythmic lines create an intricate visual pattern. It's a work that acknowledges the power of ornament, hinting at complex cultural meanings beneath its decorative exterior.
