This photogravure shows the Lybisch-Punisch mausoleum in Dougga, and was made by A.G.A. van Eelde. It’s one of those images where the lack of color feels like a real choice, like the artist is saying, "let's focus on form, on light and shadow." The surface has a kind of velvety texture, which softens the hard lines of the architecture, almost like a charcoal drawing. It's not just a record, it’s a mood. Notice how the light catches on the edges of the mausoleum, giving it a kind of ethereal quality. The building almost glows against the landscape, which is hazily drawn. I’m reminded of the work of Eugène Atget, who documented Paris at the turn of the century. Both artists find a kind of poetry in the everyday, elevating the mundane to something beautiful and timeless. It reminds us that art isn't about answers, but about opening up possibilities.
