Editor: Giovanni Anselmo’s "Direction" features two lengths of white fabric suspended from the ceiling, creating a striking visual on the floor. What symbols do you see here, and how do they resonate? Curator: The stark whiteness immediately suggests purity or a blank slate. Direction, though, implies guidance, a pointed focus. Do you notice how the fabric falls? Editor: Yes, it seems almost intentionally placed, with a sense of controlled chaos. Curator: Precisely. Anselmo often explored the tension between order and disorder, the fixed and the fluid. Consider the weight of cultural expectations placed on direction itself – are we truly free to choose? Editor: That's fascinating. So, it's not just about physical direction, but also about the direction of our lives and choices? Curator: Exactly. The simplicity of the materials allows for a complex layering of meaning. Perhaps this work is a reminder to question the forces guiding us. Editor: I never would have seen that without your insights. Thanks! Curator: My pleasure! Exploring those hidden layers is what makes art so rewarding.

In the late 1960s, Anselmo began to make sculptures exploring forces such as torsion, gravity, and magnetism. His Direction series incorporate compasses that point to the magnetic north pole. This work is made by pushing a glass beaker with a needle inside it against a dampened cloth. ‘I formed a sort of trail that the energy of the magnetic fields, continuing to orient the needle, kept alive’, Anselmo said. Inside the gallery, the work serves as a reminder of the space outside it, and the invisible forces that structure the world. Gallery label, July 2011
