Here's a sculpture made by Robert Morris, called Floor Piece (Bench). Looking at this sleek, elongated form, I imagine Morris contemplating space and volume, perhaps in relation to earlier minimalists like Donald Judd. It's like he is saying, ‘How can I compress it all into this simple shape?’ I can imagine him carefully considering the dimensions, making the form just so, to create a sense of balance, tension and harmony. That flat surface, that even grey tone… I almost want to sit on it! The way the bench elongates into the distance—it's so simple, yet so carefully calibrated. And that precise colour adds to the feeling of a perfect, continuous surface, uninterrupted by incident. It's a reminder that art is often about less, not more; it's about the power of reduction and refinement.
