Ugo da Carpi created this chiaroscuro woodcut, *The Young Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness*, sometime between 1515 and 1520. During the Italian Renaissance, religious artwork was exceedingly popular and typically served to reinforce traditional doctrine. Here, John the Baptist is depicted as an idealized, youthful figure, challenging the conventional imagery of the ascetic prophet. The artist plays with notions of purity and innocence, contrasting the saint's nudity with the rugged wilderness that surrounds him. This juxtaposition invites us to reflect on how religious figures are portrayed and perhaps to question the power dynamics inherent in these representations. As you stand here, consider how the artist’s choices create a tension between the sacred and the sensual, prompting us to reconsider the traditional narratives and question their emotional impact.
