Fernand Léger made *Deux femmes aux aldes* in 1937 with oil on canvas. He was really feeling those bold outlines and primary colors. Imagine Léger in his studio, wrestling with these shapes, trying to bring some kind of order to the canvas. You know, that struggle between what you want to say and what the painting actually lets you say? He was using these simple forms to suggest figures and objects. He was thinking about Cubism, sure, but he's also doing his own thing. Look at how he contrasts those flat areas of color with the hard black outlines. It’s almost like he's building a machine out of paint. The whole composition feels like it’s about to burst apart, but it's all held together by that underlying structure. It's a visual dance of form and color, kind of like he's rebuilding the world in his own way.
