Martin Partyka made this 'Hand Painted Wall' on paper in the late 20th century, and it feels like it was born from many layers of experimenting, pushing, and shifting until it felt just right. Imagine Martin in the studio, brush in hand, creating these curious flower and fruit forms within their lozenge frameworks. I can almost feel the rhythm of his hand as he repeats those looping lines, making a sort of hypnotic, mesmerizing effect. The colors – muted browns, whites, reds and blues – create a cozy and intimate atmosphere, while the simple, childlike renderings of flowers and fruits evoke a sense of playfulness. It almost feels like a textile sample or wallpaper design, with its repetitive pattern and decorative border. But maybe this is the root of so much art; the will to make pattern. Partyka's world is one of endless invention and surprise. It speaks to me of the joy of making and the power of art to transform the everyday into something magical.
