Majel G. Claflin designed this colcha plate using gouache and graphite on paper. Claflin, active in the early 20th century, was a designer who engaged with a key moment in the history of American craft. This plate offers insight into the artist's perspective on the cultural traditions of the Southwestern United States. Colchas, a type of embroidered bedspread, were a traditional craft practiced by women in New Mexico. During this time, the Arts and Crafts movement had a focus on the revival of traditional crafts. This design blends traditional motifs with contemporary sensibilities. Note the mix of earth tones and vibrant colors, which create a dynamic tension on the plate. Consider how the artist engages with the legacy of colcha embroidery, while asserting her own artistic vision and identity. What we see here is a beautiful negotiation of tradition and modernity.
