Fu Baoshi’s landscape, "Heaven and Earth Glow Red," uses ink and color on paper to create a world that feels both immediate and timeless. The making of this painting feels very present. You can feel the brush moving, dancing, and flicking across the paper. I love the way the red sun is just this big, juicy blob of pigment, not quite round, hinting at the energy and messiness of the process. It anchors the wispy strokes of the misty landscape, a mix of grays, pinks, and blacks. The texture of the paper really comes through, giving it a fragile, almost ethereal quality. The marks made by the brush are very visible, you can imagine Fu Baoshi working swiftly, intuitively building up layers of ink to create depth. It reminds me of Cy Twombly, another artist who embraced gesture and a sense of freedom in his mark-making. The beauty of this piece lies in its ambiguity. It's a conversation, an exchange of ideas, rather than a fixed statement.
