Ki Baitei painted this ink on paper scroll, Mountain Village, sometime between 1734 and 1810. At first glance, we observe a tranquil village nestled among towering mountains, a serene landscape painted in muted tones. But look closer, and you will notice the symbol of the mountain, a motif that transcends mere geography. Mountains, like those depicted here, have served as potent symbols across cultures. We find them in ancient Greek myths as the abode of gods, in Renaissance paintings as symbols of spiritual ascent, and even in modern cinema as barriers to overcome or challenges to face. The mountain, with its imposing presence, represents stability and permanence, an anchor in our ever-changing world. Yet, it also evokes a sense of striving, the human desire to reach higher, to transcend limitations. Consider, then, how this symbol resonates within us. Our collective memory, shaped by millennia of cultural narratives, imbues the mountain with psychological weight, a beacon in the vast landscape of the human experience.
