Seong Moy made this print, The Royal Family, with what looks like woodblock, using a limited set of colours. It feels intuitive, like he’s letting the process lead the way. The colour palette here, these ochres, reds, blues and blacks, creates a dense space. It's like the colours are bumping up against each other, fighting for space. Look at the faces, they're not trying to be realistic, they're more about feeling, like masks. See how the red slashes define the nose and mouth of the central figure? It’s raw, like a quick sketch, but it gives so much expression. I’m reminded of Picasso and the way he looked at African masks. Moy, like Picasso, isn’t just copying, he’s tapping into something primal. Art isn’t about perfection, it's about conversation, about taking what came before and turning it into something new, something messy, something real.
