This engraving, "XVI Men vinter meer", was made by Roemer Visscher around the late 16th or early 17th century. A man is depicted kicking his heel as he looks up to a bird in the sky. The gesture of kicking one's heel is deeply symbolic. In Visscher's time, this gesture represented carefree abandon. It signifies a nonchalant attitude towards loss or hardship, as indicated in the caption below the image. It echoes the ancient symbol of Fortuna, the goddess of fortune, often depicted with unstable footing, symbolizing the unpredictable nature of fate. Interestingly, this gesture has resurfaced in various forms throughout history. From ancient depictions of dancers to modern expressions of joy, this particular movement continues to hold a place in our collective consciousness. Its repeated appearance in art and culture suggests its enduring appeal as a symbol of resilience and emotional release.
