What effect do you think that has on its reception by audiences both past and present? Editor: I guess it adds layers of meaning. So, it is a painting about challenging expectations. That use of artificiality... Is there a political message being presented through art, then? Curator: Precisely. The political climate of the Italian Renaissance significantly shaped art production. Works like this, while appearing to be purely religious, often subtly reflected the socio-political power dynamics. It's crucial to consider who commissioned this piece, what their aims were, and what public message they wanted to convey. Do you think the ambiguity enhances or detracts from that political or religious intent? Editor: I think it complicates the intent, which probably made it more acceptable or, maybe, intriguing? Thinking about who paid for it really does change how you see the work. Curator: Exactly! The art isn’t just beautiful. It also can reveal something of its patronage and intended audience. Editor: I never considered all that when I first looked at this!
