Carolina Onnen captured these portraits of a man in a garden in 1911. The sepia tones lend a soft, nostalgic feel, like a memory half-faded but still warm. There's something about the way she's framed these two images that speaks to process. Look at the gentle way the light falls on the man's face in both photographs. It's not harsh or revealing, but rather kind, almost forgiving. One photograph shows a man with a dog by his side. There is a warmth to the image, a gentle affection. In the other, he's alone, a hat casting a shadow that adds a touch of mystery, a slight melancholy. Both men sit in the same wicker chair. There is a relaxed stillness about both images that make it hard to look away. These portraits remind me a little of early Man Ray, with their quiet intensity and exploration of light and shadow. Onnen invites us to contemplate the nature of portraiture itself, the stories we tell about ourselves, and the ones that remain hidden beneath the surface.
