Curatorial notes
Willem Bastiaan Tholen created this sketch of a harbor scene with moored rowboats using graphite. Tholen lived during a time of significant social and economic change in the Netherlands, as industrialization and urbanization altered traditional ways of life. The image captures a moment in the daily lives of working-class individuals, emphasizing the labor required to sustain their communities. The boats, the crates, the figures are all elements of a scene where we sense the quiet, yet persistent impact of maritime activities on local economies and social structures. The artist gives us an impression of men at work but their individuality is diminished, their identities submerged in their social function. Tholen’s artistic style aligned with the Hague School, a group of artists known for their realistic depictions of daily life and landscapes. His choice of subject reflects an interest in the lives of ordinary people. We are given a glimpse into the intersection of labor, identity, and place in the late 19th-century Netherlands.
