Biography
Willem Bastiaan Tholen was a Dutch painter born in Amsterdam in 1860. He is known for his expressive sketches and drawings, primarily in charcoal, which capture the movement of sailboats and the landscape of the Dutch coast. His works are characterized by a loose, gestural style and an emphasis on light and shadow. Tholen's sketches are often executed quickly, creating a sense of immediacy and spontaneity. The artist died in Den Haag in 1931.
