This untitled painting was made by Gene Davis at an unknown date, and with unknown materials. You know, when I look at the black bar on the left, with that tiny stripe of red and yellow, I see the seeds of a painting held back, almost shy. The canvas is mostly filled with white, thinly applied, but you can still see the texture underneath. The colors, especially the light blue on the right side, are so delicate. It reminds me a bit of Agnes Martin, in its stillness, its quietness. But there's also something else here, a kind of restraint, that maybe hints at what's to come. Davis is known for his stripe paintings, and in this one, it feels like he's testing the waters, finding his voice. It's a painting that invites you to slow down, to look closely, and to find your own way in. It's less about knowing, and more about feeling.
