Laundresses are carrying linnen
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Curator: Looking at Théophile Alexandre Steinlen’s 1898 print, “Laundresses are Carrying Linen,” I am struck by how directly it addresses the daily lives of working-class women in fin-de-siècle Paris. Editor: It feels surprisingly intimate, despite depicting a public scene. The sheer volume of what they’re carrying is visually impressive, but there is something melancholic in their downcast gaze. Curator: Well, I see it as a poignant comment on labor, materiality and consumption, particularly the thankless and physically demanding job of laundresses in the city at the time. Consider the weight of those baskets and the economic structures forcing them to carry such a burden. It reminds me that even Impressionism engaged in the tradition of depicting labor. Editor: And the graphic quality almost flattens the scene, accentuating their silhouettes against the urban backdrop. How do the institutions and cultural values of the time frame the viewers' access to an image of women performing arduous labor? Curator: Well, it's worth thinking about the multiple graphic processes. Steinlen made the image through drawing, linocut, and etching techniques, and these diverse, accessible forms enabled wide circulation. What were the implications of encountering images like this as affordable prints in domestic spaces versus galleries? Editor: You know, placing this artwork within the history of social realism gives even more impact. These figures seem very close to similar observations in Daumier. They transform private industry into the stuff of high art. Curator: Absolutely. This image makes me think about the real toll that these structures demand from everyday people, and its visual language seems so suited for disseminating complex messages about social responsibility. Editor: Agreed, this close look has sharpened my perspective; I'm much more attuned to Steinlen's sensitive representation now. Curator: I am left thinking about how a seemingly straightforward genre scene carries so much information about the production of work.
