Paulus Kerkhof’s small print, *Landschap met boomtakken*, presents us with a landscape rendered in delicate lines. It’s the stark contrast of light and shadow, achieved through fine, intricate etching, that immediately captures the eye, creating a compelling sense of depth. The composition is structured by the stark branches of trees, which stretch across the scene, their forms creating a semiotic framework, directing our gaze. The barrenness of the trees is contrasted against the more dense thickets which lie beneath and around the building in the distance, perhaps suggesting a binary between nature and civilisation. Kerkhof uses these visual elements to create a spatial dynamic which is charged with a certain tension. Notice how the linear quality of the branches contrasts against the hatching of the landscape. This tension asks us to consider the relationship between the organic forms and the structured landscape.
