This is a pencil sketch for a wall decoration made by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet sometime around the turn of the last century. Look closely at the pressure of the marks on the paper. It's so light, almost like a whisper. The central panel feels like a tangle of seaweed, or maybe the coils of a sleeping dragon, which sprawls and reaches across the different panels. It’s kind of interesting to see the linear quality here, so exposed and vulnerable. I’m always fascinated by the way artists use line to express form and movement, it's like they are trying to find their way through the chaos of their ideas. This drawing makes me think of Hilma af Klint who was also exploring spiritualist themes in her work at this time. It shows how artists are in dialogue with one another, even across time, each searching for ways to visualize the invisible.
