Carel Adolph Lion Cachet created this design for wall decoration in pencil on paper. The composition is dominated by the stark linearity of the two rectangular frames, each embellished with ornate corner details. These regular forms establish a visual rhythm and anchor the design, yet the interior spaces are quite different. On one side, the interior contains delicate, almost hieroglyphic vertical design, and on the other side the rectangular space remains blank. The contrast between the embellished details and the untouched field invites us to consider the semiotic potential inherent in ornamental design. Cachet manipulates the visual field to create a tension between order and absence. This tension prompts questions about the function of ornamentation itself: Does it serve to fill space or to define it? Is the purpose to communicate a coded message or leave space for interpretation? The raw, sketched quality of the design further underscores the provisional nature of artistic creation. It is a testament to how Cachet engages in a visual dialogue about the very nature of decoration.
