Curatorial notes
Editor: Here we have John Singer Sargent’s Study for the Prophet Joel. It’s a charcoal drawing, quite striking in its simplicity. It feels very…unfinished, almost ghostly. What do you see in it? Curator: Ah, yes. A whisper of an idea, caught in charcoal. I sense Sargent wrestling with form, not just depicting, but *feeling* the weight and drama of the prophet's presence. Notice the folds, how they seem to both conceal and reveal the figure beneath? He's chasing something, isn't he? A truth, perhaps. What do you think? Editor: I didn't consider that it captured a pursuit for truth. I thought it was all about capturing an image quickly. Curator: Perhaps both? The quickness *is* the truth of the moment. It’s like trying to hold smoke, isn’t it? Fascinating.
